How to be an Upstander - Pink Shirt Day

This week in Wananga we are learning about Pink Shirt Day. Pink shirt day is all about raising awareness to stop Bullying.

How to be an Up-stander:

  1. Awhi/support the person experiencing bullying.
    • Position yourself as close to a person being bullied as possible. People tend to move away

when bullying happens. Fleeing the scene leaves the person being bullied alone, vulnerable, and embarrassed, as they become more visible to onlookers. Instead, move towards the person being bullied and sit, walk or stand alongside them.
  2. Distract
    • You could distract a bullying by trying to ask random question such as "I need to go to (place)... walk with me" or "We're going to be late for class".
  3. Call it
    • If you feel comfortable and safe to do so, tell the bully to Stop. You could say "Stop doing this - no one deserves to be treated this way!" Sometimes putting the bully on the spot can make them feel embarrassed because someone is brave enough to tell them what to do in front of everyone.
  4. Leave and Act
    • If you feel they bullying scene is getting our of control move away quietly and then later on you might want to talk with the bully or the person getting bullied.
  5. Get some Help
    • The best idea to help with bullying is to reach out and get help. Here are ideas of people you can get help from:
    • Councillors
    • Prefects
    • Teachers
    • expert online or over the phone
    • Parents/Guardians
    • Trusted Adult
