Quote Hunting - Wonder Film Study

Analyzing the ideas and themes of a film:

Quote Hunting!

"I wish everyday could be Halloween. We could all wear masks all 

the time. Then we could walk around and get to know each other before 

we go to see what we looked like under the masks." 

- Auggie

- This quote Highlights Auggie's desires to be known for something

other than the way he looks. It's more like he wants to be hidden

under a mask all the time so other students don't get frightened

or bully him for how he looks. The problem is that few people take their

time to have the guts to go up to Auggie and talk to him and get

to know him, since many people are put off by the way he looks. 

Auggie wants everyone to realize that it matters more what

is on the inside rather than on the outside. 

"Funny how sometimes you worry a lot about something 

and it turns out to be nothing."

- Auggie

- This quote marks the beginning of Auggie changing from being

disliked and feeling like he doesn't fit and belong at school to being

accepted and being involved. He spends much time worrying about 

what the other students will think of how he looks. 

People have begun to accept Auggie for who he is and no longer react

negatively to how he looks.

"I think there should be a rule that everyone in the world should 

get a standing ovation at least once in their lives". 

- Auggie

- The entire auditorium claps for Via and the other student actors

after they complete their opening night performance of the school

play. This quote shows Auggie's insightfulness and kindness, 

he recognizes how worthwhile it is to make people feel important

and loved, and wants everyone to have that feeling. In another way,

such warm acceptance is something that he hasn't had often enough 

in his life. 

"If every single person in this room made it a rule that wherever

you are, wherever you can, you will try to act a little kinder 

than is necessary - the world really would be a better place.

- Mr. Tushman

Mr Tushman's speech at the fifth grade graduation 

is about the importance of showing kindness in all areas of life,

this also shows the theme of Kindness, because throughout

Mr Tushman's speech it gives a really touching important message

behind being kind and treating others the way they want to be treated.

The other students have learned how essential it is to be kind to everyone,

even those who appear to be different. 

"You really are a wonder, Auggie. You are a wonder"

- Mom

This quote is an acknowledgement of how Auggie has changed 

the lives of everyone around him in just being who he is.

Also how far he's made it and how he has managed to put up 

with other students calling him nasty names and not being him nicely.

Now Auggie is seen as a wonder because of his strength

of character and his braveness and kindness. 

He has taught both other characters in the film and people who are

watching the film important lessons throughout the film.

Auggie really is a Wonder.

Wonder Themes!

Kindness:

Kindness features strongly in this film, as many of Auggie's

struggles in life are linked to the unkind responses of others. 

My favorite scene in the film that shows the theme of Kindness

is at the end of the film, Mr Tushman makes an important graduation

about the importance of being kind to all people, regardless of background,

circumstances, or appearances. 

Family:

Auggie's family plays a really important role throughout the film

and in Auggie's life while adjusting attending school for the first time.

The Pullmans Family are a constant source of support, 

encouragement, and love, no matter how rough it gets of Auggie

as he tries to fit into school. Family is also important because

other characters such as Miranda don't have the luxury of a close

family like Auggie's. 

While the universe has been so unkind to Auggie in many ways,

in perhaps the most important ways it has blessed him with a loving,

supportive family that can help him get through almost anything.

Friendship:

It only takes one person to help someone who was once 

lonely feel much more confident and secure, and the friends

that Auggie makes throughout the film plays a huge role of helping

him to get through his first year at school. 

Summer is a true friend to Auggie right from the beginning,

she is there for him during his toughest times.

While Jack screws up and says things he does not mean,

he eventually realizes the mistake he is making and apologizes,

True friends make it so much easier to face and overcome any 

challenge in life.

Popularity:

Popularity is an important theme in this film, 

multiple characters struggle with the choice between doing what will

 make them popular and doing what they know is right. 

Jack tries initially to fit in with Julian because he wants

to be popular, but eventually realizes that being a friend

to Auggie is more important. Miranda tells lies at camp 

to be more popular, but loses her best friend as a result this 

dishonesty and comes to see that being friends with Via is what really

matters to her. 

Kiwi Ingenuity - Evaluation Ideas

Most benefit inventions? 

I personally think that the Clothing and Equipment invention from

Kathmandu has the most benefit because we still use the clothes and 

equipment today, and myself owns clothes from Kathmandu especially the jackets they are good for Cold winter Days, it's nice and comfy and keeps

you warm. Kathmandu is mainly the produce the high quality and long

lasting clothes and equipment mainly meant for adventure sports or 

activities like hiking, mountain climbing so on. Sustainability is the heart 

of the brand "Kathmandu" and its their culture. 

Least Beneficial Invention? 

I personally think that the "Scootboard": A  Kickscooter  inspired by a 

Skateboard and a Long Board Design. I personally think that it's dangerous

and can cause harm because my point of view it looks hard to control and keep balance. 

Two Examples of Kiwi Ingenuity that will capture the imagination

of people in other countries?

1. Mountain Buggy

  because they have lots of grip, compared to prams 

it's more safe and you can use from newborn, and it can carry two children. 

2. "Waterfall Slide" Arthur's Slide 

- because It's a nice view and if people

from the other countries see it they would want to com and bring their families

to check it out, and I think it looks nice for a family vacation.

Workshop - Ideas/Themes

Kindness - respecting others, Look after each other, speak nicely, 

             include others.

Example 1 - Summer sits with August, this shows the theme of kindness because Summer left the kids who were saying mean things to go and sit with

August who looked lonely and sad. Kindness is important to the story overall because without it August will not build confident, make friends and feel accepted. 

Example 2 - August shows kindness when he shares his answers with Jack.

This links to the theme because Auggie sees someone in need, Jack isn't 

even his friend yet, but helps him anyway. This is important because it is the first step to enabling August to make friends, being kind starts this friendship

that will be important in the film.

Importance of Family and Friendship!

Through these relationship Auggie and others learn the values of trust and 

self confidence. They are less alone. 

Example 1 - The scene where Miranda talks about spending Christmas 

with the Pullmans family. 

 -   Link to the theme  - Miranda is happy and included by the Pullmans.

 -  She is ignored/ forgotten at home.

 -  She realizes that she misses having friends/ family. 

-  Important because makes Miranda recognizes what she lost/ misses and 

    she makes an effort to reconnect with Via and the Pullmans. 

Example 2 - The boys come to rescue Jack and August.

- Auggie is included, has friends and is feeling trust and self confident.

- Ultimate example of acceptance and friendship, his classmates had his

  back without him asking. 

- First time they treat them as an equal.

Being kind vs Being Popular!

Doing the right thing even when you friends don't, others pressure you.

Example 1 - Julian picks on August in front of others, Auggie is an easy

target, it makes Julien look popular when the others laugh.

- Link to theme - Julien chose to be popular at the expenses of others,

   chase to bully Auggie to seem popular.

-  Important because it shows choosing popular has negative outcomes. 

   Julien eventually loses his friends, leaves school and is unhappy

   however Jack, who chose kind has lots of friends, is happy and doesn't

   get kicked out for bullying.

Long Jump:

1. Run up is 21 steps.
2. Take off will be from the second marker.
3. Land will be measured from the back foot.
4. Land with both feet together.
5. If you are over the second marker when you jump it is a fowl jump. 

Results:

Distant - 2m Jump

Fosbury Flop:

Today in P.E we were doing High Jump, the technique that we will

normally learn will be the scissors but today we learnt a new technique

and that was the Fosbury Flop. I was actually amazed that I didn't knock

the bar down.

Technique:

Stand lift one foot jump to turn around and flop on your back. 

Shot Put:

You will need a Shot Put. To hold a shot put properly, place the shot put

in the middle of your hand with your three fingers spread out slightly and your two fingers holding it.

Put the shot firmly against your neck in a comfortable place

After that make sure that you have your arm out 

Bend your knees slightly

Don't flex your wrist, but put the shot out with your wrist.

Discuss Techniques:

1. Roll of your small fingers
2. Wrap 4 fingers around it
3. Stand side on to the line
4. 1 wind-Up (Not 3)

Testing Food - Biology Science

Testing Foods:
Aim: What nutrients are present in different foods.

Hypothesis:
We are testing for
Simple Sugar - which is carbohydrates that gives you sugar/energy fast.
Complex Sugar - Slow releasing energy/sugar.
Protein - Long Lasting Energy and sugar.

We are Testing:
Bread - I think this will be protein, (complex)
Egg - I think this will be protein
Glucose - I think this will be a complex sugar
Apple - I think this will be complex sugar
Milk - I think this will be protein
Potato - I think this will be complex sugar

Complex Test:
Equipment: Test tube, food sample, iodine solution

Method:
1: Place about 2mL of the sample in a test tube
2: Add 3-5 drops of iodine and mix

Results + Observations:
Potato - Positive
Apple - Positive
Bread - Positive
Egg - Negative
Milk - Negative
Glucose - negative

Conclusion: 

Simple Test:
Equipment: test tube, food sample, benedicts solution

Method:

1. Place about 2mL of the of the sample in a test tube.

2. Add 3-5 drops of benedicts and mix.












Results + Observations:
Potato - Negative
Apple - Negative
bread - Negative
Egg - Negative
Milk - Positive
Glucose - Positive

Discussion:


Proteins:
Proteins are essential in the diet of all organisms. They form the main 
structural part of animal cells, therefore foods high in protein usually 
originate from animal tissue (i.e meat, eggs and protein products).
Some plant based foods are also high in protein, especially seed. 

Protein is required for:

• to repair damaged tissue
• control of chemical reactions (enzymes)
• sending messages around the body (hormones)
• providing an emergency energy source. 

Protein Test:
Aim: To test if a sample of food contains protein.
Equipment: Test tube, sodium hydroxide,  copper sulfate, food sample. 
Hypothesis:
Potato - I think it wont turn purple (no protein)
Apple - I think it will turn purple (contain protein)
bread - I think it will turn purple (contain purple)
Glucose - I think it wont turn purple (no protein)
Milk - I think it will turn purple (contain purple)
Egg - I think it won't turn purple (no protein)


Method:

 1: Place about 2mL of the sample into a test 
tube and add 5 drops of sodium hydroxide.

2: Add 5 drops of copper sulfate

3: Shake the test tube gently from side to side.





If the solution remains blue, then no protein is present. If the solution changes to a purple colour then protein is present in
the sample.  

Results:
potato - Negative (no protein)
Apple - Negative (no protein)
Bread - Negative (no protein)
Glucose - Negative (no protein)
Egg - Positive (contains protein)
Milk - Positive (contains protein)

Discussion: 

Milk is a rich source of protein because it comes from an animal,
Drinking milk and dairy products may prevent bone fractures and even 
help you maintain a healthy weight.

Egg is a source of protein, because it is produced from an animal
Eggs are also a good source of other nutrients, which also helps your health.

Conclusion:

My predictions for food samples that contained proteins were correct,
such as eggs and proteins, This test went very well and some of the results
we got were quite surprising such as bread I predicted that it will turn purple
which means that it does contain protein, but my predictions were incorrect.

Stick-man Hygiene

Below is a diagram of a stick-man representing us, and personal safety

rules an reasons why we have these rules when we are in the kitchen doing

a practical or cooking. 

Good personal hygiene can prevent food poising. 

Bacteria that cause food poising can be on everyone, even healthy people.

You can spread bacteria from yourself to the food if you touch your nose,

mouth, hair or your clothes, and then food.

By preventing this happening,

- Wash and dry your hands thoroughly before handling food, and wash 

and dry them again frequently during work.

- Dry your hands with a clean towel, disposable paper towel or under

an air dryer

- never smoke, chew gum, spit or cough over food.

- wear clean protective clothing, such as an apron.

- tie back or cover long hair

keep fingernails short so they are easy to clean, and don't wear 

nail polish because it can chip into food 

- avoid wearing jewellery.

-Completely cover all cuts and wounds with a wound strip or bandage.

-Tell the teacher if you don't feel well, and don't handle food.

Hand washing:

Thoroughly washing your hands reduces the chance of contaminating food

with bacteria from yourself.

Wash your hands with soap and warm water, and don't forget the back of your

hands, wrists, between your fingers and under your fingernails.

Thoroughly dry your hands immediately after you wash them. Always dry 

your hands with a clean towel, disposable paper, the important thing is to make

sure your hands are dry. 

Conclusion:

Poor personal hygiene can cause serious problem in the kitchen, food poisoning 

being the most serious. 

Hauora - Wellbeing

A conclusion on what the "Whare Tapa Wha" is, 

Learning Reflection:

and how it illustrates Hauora?

Te Whare Tapa Wha is a maori marae or a house. 
Te Whare Tapa Wha compares health to the four walls of a house where all
four walls are necessary to ensure strength.
The four aspects of Hauora are Taha Tinana (Physical), Taha Wairua (Spiritual,
Taha Hinegaro (Mental & Emotional), and Taha Whanau (Social).

Taha Whanau:
"The capacity to belong, to care, and to share"
Taha Whanau (social wellbeing) refers to the connections people have with others,
including their family, friends and wider social circles. 

Taha Tinana:
"The capacity of physical growth and development"
Taha Tinana (physical wellbeing) refers to the growth and development of the body 
and ways of caring it. 

Taha Hinegaro:
"The capacity to communicate, to think, and to feel"
Taha hinegaro (mental and emotional wellbeing) refers to the feelings and thoughts 
people have and how they are connected to behaviour.

Taha Wairua:
"The values values and beliefs that determine how people live"
Taha wairua (spiritual wellbeing) refers to the value and beliefs people 
have. 

How Did I participate during this lesson?
I participated in this lesson by completing set task, and participating in 
class activites, and also contributing to class conversations such as answering questions and being able to explain to peers what I learnt..

What is the current state of your Hauora?
I feel like there's nothing I need to improve on, also all four aspects of my 
are all good and healthy.
